Although its tempting to show off beautiful tea leaves in glass jars, factors such as light, heat, moisture, odor, air exposure, may certainly remove precious leaves from their freshness and cause the tea to lose flavor.

๐ŸŒŸLight: Avoid buying tea from vendors who store their tea in glass or plastic containers. Likewise, avoid storing your tea in anything clear (unless you plan on keeping it in a dark cabinet). Light, including UV rays, can degrade your teas very quickly.

๐ŸŒŸHeat: Avoid placing teas in the sun or near heat sources such as ovens or stoves as it also degrades your tea.

๐ŸŒŸMoisture: Avoid storing your tea in humid areas (i.e. in a refrigerator or above a dishwasher vent). Tea absorbs water from the air very easily and quickly. Therefore, it is most stable when its stored in a dry environment. Note: Only tightly sealed canisters of Japanese green teas can be stored in a fridge, and those should be consumed shortly after they are opened.

๐ŸŒŸOdor: Tea absorbs smell very easily, which means storing your teas near a trashcan, spice cabinet, or other source of odor is a definite no no.

๐ŸŒŸAir: Sealing tea with excess air in the packaging or storing it in porous packaging materials, like paper bags is the best way to ensure freshness of tea. Avoid leaving tea out! Air exposure increases the chances that your tea will absorb moisture and odors.
